Landon's holy words

Landon often surprises us with his comments, but what's been particularly surprising over the last few months are the things he has said about religion and God.

In early May, we were heading to my nephew's First Communion. Landon speaks up...

LCS: Daddy, why aren't you Catholic?
JBS: Because I grew up in a different religion.
Me: But Daddy is a Christian just like us. He's just not a Catholic Christian.
LCS: Do you want to be Catholic?
JBS: I don't know.
Me: It's not a big deal, Landon, because Daddy believes in God and Jesus, and he goes to church with us.
LCS: Yeah Dad, but don't you want to receive the Body and Blood of Christ?

I mean, really?!?!? I was dumbfounded and also a little emotional that my kid actually got a little bit of what was going on in church. I admit, I was proud, but still so shocked.

Then on Father's Day, we are having a discussion that Father's Day is also for Papa, and Pops, and Uncle Woody, and all of the dads out there. Landon pipes in "Don't forget the most important and biggest dad...God".

If my son didn't like girls so darn much, I would think I had a priest on my hands....

Beach 2010

Earlier this month, we packed up the Sequoia and headed down to Santa Rosa, FL for a long weekend. We were there to celebrate the wedding of Jason's cousin, Kyle. We had a fabulous time! We shared a condo with another one of Jason's cousins who has a 7 year old son. The boys LOVED that. We were fortunate that the oil did not ruin our beach and ocean time. We didn't see any oil at all. In fact, the water was beautiful (besides the seaweed). We spent time at the pool and also participated in many wedding activities. It was a wonderful trip. I wish it could have been longer, but our big trip this year is our family reunion in South Dakota in July. At least we were able to get a short beach trip in this year. 5 seconds of fame

I made the rule when Landon was born that "my car, my music". Most of the time, the regular radio stations annoy me, so I turn on sports talk radio. The kids are used to this as it's what we listen to most in the car (we listen to a lot of music at home). Last Wednesday on our way home from the zoo, we were listening to the usual. The guys mentioned that they were broadcasting from a restaurant/bar right around the corner from our house. I asked Landon if he would like to go see them, and he said yes. I really had no intention of meeting them. I mostly thought it was a learning experience--showing them that the people they hear on the radio are real, and the boys could see them in action. One of the guys on that particular show was the quarterback for UGA when they won the National Championship. I explained this to Landon as we drove passed our home and went to the location. The four of us walked into the restaurant, and I pointed to the guys doing the show. I told my boys that those were the people they heard on the radio, wasn't that cool, etc. Well, Buck Belue (the former UGA player mentioned above) saw us and immediately walked over to meet the kids. I was so impressed with him and his interaction with my children. He asked each of their names (including little Lilah) and encouraged Landon to talk some Georgia football with him. He motioned to an intern to get the boys something, and he came back with two adult XL t-shirts (yes, that's all they had) and two personalized signed copies of a picture of him in that championship year. The boys were so happy, and both slept in those over-sized tees that night. What I thought was cool was what we heard once we were in the car getting everyone buckled and ready to head home...

Buck Belue: "Well, we just had Landon and Noah stop by to say hello. Landon's a big Georgia guy, and we're expecting great things from him in a few years".

My boys' five seconds of fame still makes me smile. Thanks Buck for actually taking time to meet the people who listen to you.

When Noah asked why we were getting out of the car, Landon said "to see the guys who talk about the Braves and the Bulldogs". Ahhh--this mommy was meant to have boys.

Sometimes I wish we didn't have to blink. Other times I catch myself blinking faster. I need to start blinking slower, that's for sure.

Kindergarten--so last year....

Well, he made it! Or maybe I should say we made it. Landon's first year of 'real' school was done as of May 26th. We couldn't have been prouder of him this year. He is reading like he's been doing it for years. He's a mathematician (okay--that may be a small exaggeration, but he has already started multipication). His handwriting is readable. And his conduct was awesome. He made it like it was absolutely nothing. He's excited for first grade, but a little nervous because "there are tests in 1st grade". He'll do fine or even better than fine as he did this year. Congratulations Landon! We never doubted how incredible you would be!

Now it's off to First Grade because, let's face it, kindergarten was sooooo last year.
